When you dive into the wintry world of skiing, a high-quality pair of ski goggles is an indispensable accessory. Not only will they protect your eyes from the elements, but they will also improve your vision on the slopes. In this blog post, we will introduce the different types of ski goggles so you can make the right choice for your next ski vacation.
1. spherical ski goggles: The ultimate in panoramic vision
Spherical ski goggles are known for their curved, hemispherical lens that approximates the natural shape of the eye. This design provides a wide field of view and minimizes distortion, resulting in excellent panoramic vision. Spherical goggles are perfect for demanding skiers who like to explore steep slopes and varied terrain.
Due to their shape, spherical ski goggles also reduce light refraction and glare, which is especially beneficial on sunny days and in snow-covered areas. They not only offer excellent protection from the elements, but also a clear view of the mountain landscape.
2. cylindrical ski goggles: Stylish and practical
Cylindrical ski goggles feature a flat lens that is vertically curved but horizontally straight. This design provides a wide field of vision that, while not quite as large as spherical goggles, is still impressive. Cylindrical goggles are a stylish and practical choice for skiers who value clear vision and modern design. These goggles offer excellent peripheral vision and are often lighter and slimmer than spherical models. They are ideal for skiers who value style and functionality and appreciate the flexibility of a cylindrical lens.
3. interchangeable lens ski goggles: Adaptability in changing conditions
Weather conditions in the mountains can change quickly, from sunny skies to heavy snowfall. Interchangeable lens ski goggles are the solution to this versatility. They feature interchangeable lenses that you can change as needed. For example, you can use dark lenses in sunny weather and switch to clear or yellow lenses when visibility is poor. These goggles offer adaptability and are a great investment because they can be used year-round. Skiers who want to experience different conditions and seasons will appreciate the versatility of interchangeable lens ski goggles.
Conclusion
Choosing the right ski goggles depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you plan to ski. Spherical ski goggles offer superior panoramic vision, cylindrical goggles are a stylish choice, and interchangeable lens ski goggles are highly adaptable. No matter which model you choose, make sure the goggles fit well so they sit comfortably and don't fog up. Invest in high-quality ski goggles to protect your eyes from wind, snow, and harmful UV rays so you can enjoy skiing to the fullest.

Skiing is a fascinating winter sport that attracts people from all over the world to the snowy mountains. But before you venture out onto the slopes, you should consider which type of ski best suits your skiing style and needs. In this blog post, we will introduce the three basic types of skis: Alpine skis, freeride skis and carving skis As well as the types for off-piste.
1. alpine ski: perfect for beginners
Probably the best known type of skis are alpine skis. They are characterized by their wide center and narrow tapered tips and ends. This design provides stability and control, making them the perfect choice for beginners. If you're just getting started with skiing, alpine skis are a great option to learn the basics and build your confidence. The wide center of alpine skis provides a larger surface area to float on the snow, which helps with balance and reduces the risk of falls. They also allow for smooth turns that are easier for beginners to master. Alpine skis are ideal for those who are comfortable on groomed slopes and ski resorts.
2. freeride ski: for adventurers and deep snow lovers.
If you prefer the off the groomed slopes and are looking for untouched deep snow, freeride skis are the right choice. With their wide construction and pronounced rocker shape, they glide effortlessly through powder snow and offer fantastic floatation. These skis are perfect for adventurous skiers who enjoy off-piste adventures. The wide shovel and rocker at the tip of the freeride skis allow you to glide effortlessly through deep snow without sinking in. This gives you an amazing sense of freedom as you explore the untouched slopes. Freeride skis are ideal for those who like to get off the beaten path and enjoy nature in its full glory.
3. carving ski: speed and precision.
Carving skis are made for those skiers who love speed and precision. With a narrow waist and pronounced edges, they allow for sharp turns and fast descents on groomed slopes. If you're a thrill seeker and like to make fast-paced descents, carving skis are an excellent choice. The narrow waist of carving skis allows you to lean into the turns and make the most of the edges. This leads to a precise feel and fast turns. Carving skis are ideal for advanced skiers who want to develop their skills on groomed slopes and seek the thrill of speed. Before you choose one of these types of skis, it's important to consider your personal preferences and abilities. A visit to a ski rental shop or ski school can help you make the right choice and ensure you have the best skiing experience possible. No matter what type of ski you choose, remember to have fun and enjoy the exciting world of skiing.
4. touring skis: ascents into the wilderness
If you see skiing as a means of exploring nature, touring skis could be just the thing for you. These skis are specially designed for ascents and allow you to reach remote areas. They are lighter than conventional skis and have bindings that make going uphill easier. After the ascent, you can switch the bindings to a downhill position and enjoy the descent.
5. cross-country skiing: endurance and enjoyment of nature
Cross-country skis are a great choice for those who appreciate endurance and the beauty of nature. With a long, narrow construction, they offer excellent gliding characteristics and allow you to explore long distances in the great outdoors. Cross-country skis are perfect for gentle descents and flat trails.
Conclusion
Choosing the right type of ski depends on your experience level and personal preferences. If you're a beginner, alpine skis are the best choice to learn the basics. On the other hand, if you're looking for adventure in deep snow, freeride skis are the right option. Carving skis offer speed and precision, while touring skis and cross-country skis emphasize nature and the freedom of winter sports. Before you decide on a ski type, get advice from experts at a ski rental shop. They can help you choose the right size and type of skis that fit your needs. No matter what type of ski you choose, remember to have fun and enjoy the breathtaking mountain scenery as you glide down the slopes.

Different shoe categories according to area of use and skiing ability. Meanwhile, most high-quality shoes individually adjustable inner shoes, take time for trying on - shoes should be worn at least 30 minutes, inner shoe adapts over time to the foot (about the heat), ski socks very important when driving but also try on
Beginners
Relatively soft and comfortable ski boots. These models usually have a thicker inner shoe. They are forgiving and have a flex below 100 (60-90). The boot is therefore easier to bend which means less effort when skiing.
Our Models:
When it comes to beginner and all-mountain ski boots, we have a wide selection of Atomic, Nordica and Dalbello models at Skikönig. All world leading brands in the industry. Come by and we have the right boot for you.
Allrounder / Allmountain
Mixture of comfort and performance. The models have a flex between 90-130. The inner boots are comfortable and still a little thicker to have fun even on all-day ski trips. Nevertheless, they allow a very sporty skiing and can score not only on the slopes, but also in deep snow.
Our models:
When it comes to beginner and all-mountain ski boots, we have a wide selection of Atomic, Nordica and Dalbello models at Skikönig. All world leading brands in the industry. Come by and we have the right boot for you.
Piste/racing shoes
Very hard shoe, thus very good power transmission, leader good drivers and high speeds, flex 130 up, comfort is in the background, mostly individually adjustable inner shoes, weight in the background.
Our top model:
Dalbello Veloce (women's and men's model). This model is on the border between professional sports and high-quality all-round shoe. With a flex of 130 (105 women's model), the boot has excellent power transmission and is made of very high-quality materials. With this shoe, even experienced skiers can push their performance limits. Despite everything, Dalbello manages with this model, especially through the inner shoe, not to put the comfort completely in the back, so that the shoe can be worn all day without any problems. The series is aimed specifically at skiers with medium width foot.
Freeride
Freeride models usually have a slightly lower flex than piste-oriented ski boots i.e. between 100-130. The shell here is therefore somewhat softer & more flexible shell to give the wearer a good feeling even during the ascent. The slightly thicker inner shoes serve, in addition to comfort, to absorb the shocks during the descent. The shaft of most models is not as high as in racing shoes and there is usually an additional closure at the back to unlock the walking function for the ascent. Meanwhile, most models are designed for pin bindings, as weight is also looked at in the binding area. Should you not have a pin binding pay attention to whether your shoe is compatible with a frame - binding.
Our top models:
Dalbello Lupo (women's and men's model). The Dalbello Lupo is the ideal freeride boot for those who do not want to miss out on the ascent. In this boot, the front shell can still be removed when walking. This makes the boot lighter and allows, in combination with the rear buckle (releases the walking function), a range of motion when hiking of 67 °. On the descent, one then has thanks to a 120 flex and the wide powerstrap on the relatively high shaft an excellent downhill performance. In addition, this shoe can be mounted on the proven GripWalk sole from Vibram for maximum grip.
Nordica STRider (women's and men's model) The Nordica STRider is to be classified in the same category as the Dalbello Lupo whereby here even more focus is placed on the downhill. This shoe has four buckles in front and a flex of 130, which is already very close to an AllMountain shoe. Despite everything, you have a movement angle of 46 ° with the hike function so that nothing stands in the way of an ascent.
Touring shoes
Usually comfort and weight play the most important role in the ascent. There are big differences here, especially when it comes to downhill quality. Some models that are extremely ascent-oriented can cause problems on more demanding descents. Here, the ultra-light material of the ski boot can no longer provide power transmission and stability. The qualities of these models lie in the low weight and the very high freedom of movement of the shoes.
Our top models:
For touring equipment, we refer you to one of our friendly sports retailers. The "Sport Adler" in Ischgl can offer you exceptionally competent advice in the field of touring.

WATCH OUT WHEN BUYING SKI BOOTS!
You have already booked your skiing vacation in Paznaun? Only your equipment is no longer up to date or you would like to buy your own equipment? Then you've come to the right place. At Schikönig Ski Rental you have the possibility to choose between many different models and manufacturers to rent or buy the right ski boots. Maybe you have the problem that your ski boots hurt again and again and for this reason you often have to leave the slopes earlier. You are not alone in this. It is widely known that ski boots are the most important piece of equipment for skiing. Among two million pairs of feet, you will not find an identical one. This shows well how difficult it is to find the right ski boots so that you can have the maximum comfort and fun on the slopes or in the backcountry. The Schikönig team has put together a few tips for you on how to find the right ski boot. Read on quickly or visit us right away!
What should you look for when choosing?
Skiing ability and area of use
Do you ski comfortably on the slopes or do you prefer the backcountry? Are you a beginner or a pro? This info is crucial for choosing the right ski boot model. Boots designed for the slopes have a higher degree of hardness. This means they are stiffer than a boot used for freeriding. This is referred to as "flex." As a rule of thumb, the higher the flex, the harder the boot, the better the power transfer to the ski. However, the flex value in the shoe industry is not standardized. This means that the actual hardness of the boot can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. In addition, it should be noted that the flexibility of the material is temperature-dependent. The longer you stand in your boot or the warmer the outside temperature, the softer the material becomes. Depending on the use of the ski boot, you should also pay attention to the material and geometry of the sole. If you plan to hike or even climb during your excursions, you should consider this when choosing. Most freeride shoes also have an extra buckle at the back of the shoe. This can greatly improve the mobility when walking.
Size and shape of the model
When choosing a shoe, pay attention not only to the length of the foot, but also to the shape of the foot. Do you have narrow or wide feet or a high instep? The models are usually cut differently - make sure that the cut of the shoe fits your foot. Many manufacturers offer different last widths and also take into account flat, splay or flat feet. In order to get as close as possible to the perfect size, the sizes of ski boots are given in Mondopoint for foot length. This corresponds to the foot length in mm. The width is defined by the last width, which can vary from model to model. Women's models are cut to fit women's feet and, apart from the professional range, generally have a slightly lower flex.
Caution - not too comfortable!
Ski boots are not slippers, which means they simply must not be too comfortable! A study by the DVS shows that 90% of skiers usually buy shoes that are too big. This is often the reason that feet hurt or toes fall asleep. If a ski boot is too wide, for example, the buckles have to be tightened so that you get more support and then your feet fall asleep and the boot pinches. After that, you have to apply much more force while skiing to get proper pressure on the edges. You are still unsure? Our Schikönig team has many years of experience and will be happy to give you comprehensive advice.
Consultation on site
Bring time with you!
Your feet are in your ski boots all day, whether on the slopes or at après-ski. For this reason you should take some time for the purchase, without any time pressure. Allow at least 30 minutes when you try on a ski boot, only from this time you can give a reasonably meaningful feedback about the shoe. Especially in the morning or at noon is a good time to buy, because your feet get wider during the day.
Choosing the right socks
Please be sure to bring the socks you will be skiing in. We do have trial socks on site at the ski rental shop, but that is only a stopgap measure. Please don't make the mistake of wearing extra thick socks or even two pairs on top of each other, as you will get cold feet and the fit in the ski boot will not be optimal. We also offer you top ski socks from Falke in the ski rental. The new materials used by this brand keep your feet warm and wick away sweat. They are much thinner than the usual ski socks. We hope to see you soon at Schikönig!

With the right equipment, fun on the mountain is guaranteed. This also applies to the right ski goggles. They guarantee you a perfect view and offer protection from wind, sunlight and other skiers. In bad weather conditions, your vision is significantly improved and in case of a fall, you are additionally protected.
So, now you want to buy a new pair of ski or snowboard goggles. There's a huge range on offer, and apart from function and fit, they should also look really good on you. But what do you have to look out for? We have summarised the most important points for buying goggles so that you can reach your goal quickly.
1. fit & size
Ideally, the glasses should rest evenly on your face without pressing against your nose. The frame size is also important. Glasses that are too small will restrict your field of vision. Fine-tuning is then done by the elastic strap, which you can adjust individually to suit you and your helmet. Feel free to try out different manufacturers.
2. helmet
Please make sure you bring your helmet with you when you buy your goggles. Both parts must be compatible to avoid pressure points, draughts and limited vision. If you don't have a helmet yet, the same applies. Goggles and helmet should be compatible and form a unit. You can find advice on buying helmets in our Schikönig blog!

3. glass colours and interchangeable lenses
Fog, sun, snowfall - there is a suitable lens for all weather conditions. Most manufacturers solve this task with interchangeable lenses. Oakley, for example, offers a special technology in which the lens automatically adjusts to the light conditions (you can find various Oakley models in the Schikönig Shop). - Snow, fog or night skiing: Yellow, orange or pink lenses are the best choice here. They enhance the contrasts and prevent reflection in the snow. This makes it much easier to see bumps and holes. - Pure sun - here you should choose dark or mirrored lenses to filter out UV radiation. - If the sun and clouds alternate, you will have the best view with green, blue or brown lenses. They are the absolute all-rounders and are also recommended for very dense fog when yellow lenses are no longer sufficient.
4. spherical or cylindrical lenses
Ski goggles with a cylindrical lens offer you top value for money. Here the lens is horizontally curved, i.e. slightly flatter, and can display a slightly distorted image of the surroundings. With spherical lenses, the lens is curved like a panoramic view, it offers you an improved all-round view and is therefore also somewhat more expensive than cylindrical lenses in terms of price.

5. ski goggles for spectacle wearers
If you don't want to do without your optical glasses and prescription ski goggles are too expensive for you, there are now OTG ("over the glass") solutions from almost all manufacturers. The frames are usually a little more generous and the ventilation system a little more sophisticated. Another alternative is helmets with visors (see also our buying guide for ski helmets in our blog). High wearing comfort and sufficient ventilation ensure optimal fun on the slopes.
6. care
A microfibre cloth is your best friend here, please do not use your jacket or a handkerchief for cleaning. You will only spread the dirt evenly and the chance of scratching the lens is quite high. It is best to wash off dirt from your ski goggles with lukewarm water. Carefully wipe dry with the microfibre cloth and let the strap air dry. Please keep away from hair dryers and heaters, as the goggles could become distorted. Please do not scratch! If, for example, something sticks to your lens, please do not use sharp objects or your fingernails. Again, use water and a microfibre cloth carefully. Once your ski goggles are dry, it is best to store them in a suitable goggle case. For a personal consultation, just come and visit us at Schikönig. We offer a large selection of ski goggles and sunglasses.
We look forward to seeing you!

It's autumn here in Tyrol! And in contrast to you, we are already preparing everything for the coming ski season in Kappl and Ischgl. Maybe you are already planning your skiing vacation. In addition to hotel and travel costs, ski passes and equipment hit the budget. Maybe your ski equipment is getting on in years and you are thinking about renting ski equipment this year. We have created a small summary to help you with your decision:
Costs
If you decide to rent equipment, you will not have to pay the high purchase costs for skis, poles and boots. So for those who don't ski regularly, rental skis are usually cheaper. Locals used to buy their own ski equipment, but here too we are noticing a change in trend. Especially with children: Here we have been offering a favorable seasonal rental for years. Because children need new skis or snowboards almost every year and often a change of equipment is necessary during the season. All no problem with the Schikönig annual rental for children's skis. It is also important to remember that you always have the latest ski models to choose from in the ski rental. Every year our stock is renewed and expanded with top skis.
Material care
Rental skis are always in top condition. The edges are freshly sharpened, the base waxed and the ski or snowboard is technically up to date. So you don't have to worry about the material care at the end of the season. You come comfortably to us in the Schikönig, get the freshly prepared material and off you go to the slopes. Of course we also offer an excellent ski and snowboard service. You are welcome to book this on site or by phone. Click here for the ski service with our senior chef Josef.
Skiing level
You are sporty ambitious, a beginner ski is actually no longer the right thing for you, but it is already in your basement, what to do - rent skis. Another advantage is that you rent skis every season that fit your skiing level. If the material does not fit, it can be exchanged at our ski rental.
How much space do I have?
Is it worth buying a roof rack or box? Do we have enough space in the basement for all the ski equipment of the family - if you can answer this with no, then rental skis are the answer here as well. You arrive comfortably at our place in Paznaun, park directly in front of the ski rental and simply take your rental equipment with you. If you book online in advance, there are always special online discounts! Click here for booking . If you really have no space in the car, contact us, they can organize a transport to your accommodation for sure.
Weather
Imagine you are with us in Kappl, overnight it has snowed half a meter of fresh powder and you don't want to ski on the slopes. A day in freeride paradise requires the right "powder slats" - the simple solution is to come to us in the Schikönig early in the morning, choose your skis and be the first to arrive at the lift.

Have you already booked your skiing holiday in Paznaun? Only your equipment is no longer up to date or you would like to buy new equipment, then you have come to the right place. At the Schikönig ski rental you have the possibility to choose between many different models and manufacturers, to rent the right ski boots or to buy them directly.
Maybe you have the problem that your ski boots hurt again and again and that's why you often have to leave the slopes early. You are not alone in this. It is widely known that ski boots are the most important piece of skiing equipment. Out of two million pairs of feet, you won't find an identical pair. This shows quite well how difficult it is to find the right ski boots so that you can have the maximum comfort and fun on the slopes or in the backcountry. The Schikönig team has put together a few tips for you on how to find the right ski boot. Read on quickly or come and see us now!
  Bring time!
Your feet are in your ski boots all day, whether on the slopes or at après-ski. For this reason, you should take some time to buy them, without any time pressure. Allow at least 20 minutes when trying on a ski boot, only after this time can you give a reasonably meaningful feedback about the boot. Morning or midday is a particularly good time to buy, because not only do your feet get wider during the day, the ski boots also get wider after several days of skiing.
Choose the right socks!
Please make sure you bring the socks you will be wearing when you go skiing. We do have trial socks on site in the ski hire shop, but this is only an emergency solution. Please don't make the mistake of wearing extra thick socks or even two pairs on top of each other, as this will give you cold feet and the fit in the ski boot will not be optimal. We also offer top ski socks from Falke in our ski rental. The new materials that are now also used for ski socks keep your feet warm and wick away sweat. They are much thinner than the usual ski socks.
Hands off slippers!
Ski boots are not slippers, which means they simply must not be too comfortable! A study by the DVS shows that 90% of skiers usually buy shoes that are too big. This is often the reason why feet hurt or toes fall asleep.
If a ski boot is too wide, for example, the buckles have to be tightened much more to give you more support and then your feet fall asleep and the boot pinches. In addition, you have to use much more force when skiing to get proper pressure on the edges.
Pay attention to the shape of your feet!
If your foot is particularly wide or extremely narrow, this is important information for choosing a model. Many manufacturers offer different last widths and take into account flat, splay or flat feet. Our Schikönig team has many years of experience and will be happy to give you comprehensive advice.
Your riding skills and the area of use are decisive!
Do you ski comfortably on the slopes or do you prefer the backcountry? Are you a beginner or a pro? This information is crucial for choosing the right ski boot model. Boots designed for the piste have a higher degree of hardness. This means they are stiffer than a boot that is used for freeriding. This is called "flex". In most cases, this number is even indicated on the boot. As a rule of thumb, the higher the flex, the harder the boot, the better the power transmission to the ski. However, since no standard has been set so far, it is rather more difficult to compare different manufacturers directly with each other. The best thing is to get advice from us on site. We hope to see you soon at the Schikönig!

How do I find the right ski helmet?
With a ski helmet you were considered an exotic until a few years ago. Today, the helmet is part of the standard equipment of (almost) every skier and snowboarder. According to KFV, the wearing rate is more than 90%. This is reflected positively in the accident statistics. So that you are also safe in the coming winter on the slopes, we have summarized for you a buying guide for ski and snowboard helmets. First of all, the most important thing is that your desired helmet either meets the European safety standard DIN EN1077, or the North American standard ASTM F-2040. Helmets that meet these standards is safe and tested!
Which type of helmet suits me?
Full shell or half shell
This is the first question you should ask yourself. Full-shell helmets extend over the ears and are used primarily for ski racing. Half-shell helmets provide adequate protection for the recreational athlete. They are comfortable to wear and have good ventilation.
Hard shell helmets
These helmets consist of two components, an outer shell and an inner shell. Both parts are produced separately and later glued together. Ventilation systems and additional grids are placed between the two shells for greater comfort and safety.
In-mold helmets
Through a thermal process, after molding the outer shell, a foam core is foamed directly into the shell. Thus, the two components become one solid part. In-mold helmets are particularly lightweight.
Hybrid helmets
Are a combination of the two previous models. In the hard shell as the inner workings of the in-mold technology is installed. For this, the helmet is lightweight and has a high impact resistance.
Helmets with integrated visor / ski goggles
An optimal solution for spectacle wearers. The integrated visor provides sufficient ventilation so that the glasses do not tarnish. Also the wearing comfort is high, nothing can press, as with regular ski goggles.
This is how the helmet should fit:
The first step is to determine the size of your helmet. Simply measure the circumference of your head (about a finger's width above the eyebrow) and use a size chart to determine the right size. Keep in mind that the sizing can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Here is the size chart from our manufacturer POC as a guide:

Now it's time to try it on. Your helmet should sit firmly and comfortably on your head without a closed chin strap. You can confirm the optimum fit with the shake test. To do this, put on the helmet and shake your head vigorously. If the ski helmet sits firmly on the head without slipping sideways or even falling off, you have found the right one. Accurate fit and wearing comfort are the most important! With many ski helmets you can still make a fine adjustment by a wheel at the back of the head. Also the exchange of the padding can distinguish a size. This always depends on the manufacturer or the model. Please also check at the time of purchase whether your ski goggles fit the helmet. A buying guide and even more info on ski goggles you can read in this blog article: Schikönig buying guide for ski goggles
When do I have to replace the ski helmet?
As a rule, a well-maintained ski helmet lasts up to five years. The high UV radiation in the mountains takes its toll on the material. Cracks appear on the outer shell and the helmet becomes brittle. But light blows and falls also accelerate the aging process. If you discover even minor damage, it is essential to replace the helmet. The same applies after heavy falls. So please watch out for scratches and cracks!
Clean your ski helmet properly
Skiing and snowboarding can be quite sweaty, so you should clean your helmet at least once a season. Remove sweat, dander and dirt to prolong the life of your ski helmet. The following steps are necessary:

Carefully loosen upholstery and wash by hand. Air dry and if necessary use a disinfectant for textiles.
Wipe helmet exterior and interior with a damp cloth. Please do not use cleaners with solvents

Schikönig Tip : Store your ski and snowboard helmets best protected from UV rays. This also applies to the car.
Rental helmets & hygiene
Of course, you can also rent ski and snowboard helmets at a reasonable price. Our rental helmets are replaced after the second season at the latest. After each rental all helmets are checked for damage, disinfected and cleaned.
